Â鶹ÉçÇø will host the inaugural Darkwater Women in Music Festival on March 1-2.

The Darkwater festival will celebrate women in music scholarship, women in music performance and composition and women in music business through papers, panels and performances with two events running concurrently throughout the festival.

There will be presentations on research topics ranging from military bands to Fergie. It will show amazing, but underperformed music by women from across the United States who submitted to a call and chosen by a committee of academics and musicians not affiliated with Â鶹ÉçÇøP.

Sarah Busman, Â鶹ÉçÇøP flute professor, started the Darkwater festival to continue to introduce the student body to compositions by women, following the success of last year’s Women in Music recital.

“We're starting something awesome right here at Â鶹ÉçÇøP, and we want our Â鶹ÉçÇøP community to be on the front lines supporting women in music."

Keynote speaker, Dr. Elena Ruehr, is an award-winning faculty member at MIT. Her oeuvre includes chamber ensemble compositions, orchestra, chorus, wind ensemble, instrumental solo, opera, dance and silent film.

The festival will be held throughout campus, but mainly in Moore Hall with the reception in UC Annex. Check-in will open at 3 p.m. on March 1.
