Special Collections resources include the Lumbee River Fund, a collection of photographs; the Charlie Rose Collection, the papers of the former Seventh Congressional District Congressman; University archives; and numerous books, articles, and media items pertaining to regional and University history.17 The Curriculum Laboratory Housed in the Education Center and not overseen by Mary Livermore Library staff, the Curriculum Laboratory contains about 1,000 textbooks and other materials which support faculty and students engaged in the teaching and study of licensure programs in the Teacher Education Program. Mary Livermore Library staff provides advice and support to Curriculum Laboratory personnel as requested.18 The Music Resource Center The Music Resource Center, located in Moore Hall, serves the needs of music students and faculty. Its collections include music scores and CDs and they are accessible through the Mary Livermore Library catalog. Staff members of the Music Resource Center and the Mary Livermore Library collaborate in the addition of music resources to the Mary Livermore Librarys electronic catalog.19 Development of Appropriate Collections In order to continue to develop a library collection that best supports the curriculum, library staff relies on a collection/selection policy that contains guidelines for purchases, gift acceptance, and deselection.20 A liaison system is in place which provides library staff a methodology for obtaining the expertise of teaching faculty as selections are made.21 Collection Assessment The Mary Livermore Library carries out individual assessments of library resources by discipline in order to maintain current and relevant resources that support the Universitys curriculum. 22 Some programs such as Environmental Science are multidisciplinary and require assessment across many subject areas. The Collection Development/Electronic Resources Librarian uses manifold resources in order to create these assessments. Subject areas of the collection are assessed using Bowkers Book Analysis System in tandem with the Resources for College Libraries (RCL) to insure that the most critical resources are available and possible weaknesses can be addressed. Resources for College Libraries (RCL) is a list of resources that are highly recommended for academic libraries. In addition, the Librarys integrated system, Millennium, is used to examine subject areas for overall numbers by topic, currency, and use of available items. Input from Reference and Instructional Services personnel is also used to assist in identifying collection deficiencies in relation to specific course research assignments. Annually the Serials/Digital Operations Coordinator requests input from faculty regarding their level of satisfaction with serials resources. 23 In order to continue to refine the collection for currency a weeding program led by the Collection Development/Electronic Resources Librarian is in place, utilizing guidelines contained in the Librarys Deselection Policies and Procedures24 and relying upon participants in the library liaison system to share expertise as decisions are reached for additions and deletions. Access to Shared Resources The Mary Livermore Library is a participant in a shared catalog, along with Fayetteville State University and 鶹 Wilmington libraries; this arrangement is called the Coastal Consortium. Member libraries agree to expedite physical items requested for loan, with delivery provided via the state courier system. Agreements are in place with area libraries for sharing of resources also.25 Access to Resources Outside the Consortium Document delivery service is available, requested through the library website.26 OCLC is utilized to identify request sites and ILliad software is used to manage request procedures. The Library subscribes to Copyright Clearance Center services to assure compliance with copyright requirements. In 2006-07 1,835 items were loaned and 1,191 items borrowed, making 鶹 Pembroke a net lender.27 Reference and Instructional Services Mary Livermore Library personnel staff the Reference Desk during all hours of operation. Individual assistance with research is available to students, faculty, staff, and community members in the Library as well as via electronic means for persons outside the Library.28 During 2006-07 reference activity included 5,401 research questions, 4,093 directional questions, 288 questions from distance education students, and 662 questions answered with government documents.29 Instructional services provide library use instruction sessions geared toward the development of the skills of information literacy. Services are offered to off-campus classes and visiting public school groups, as well as to on-campus groups who are instructed in the Librarys electronic classroom.30 In 2006-07 there were 215 instructional sessions provided with an attendance of 3,526.31 Off-campus and Distance Education Services and Resources A librarian on the Mary Livermore library staff, the Outreach/Distance Education Librarian, works directly with students and classes not located on the main campus. Instructional services have been provided by the Outreach/Distance Education Librarian and other librarians at 13 off-campus sites as requested.
