Faculty discussed the topic of allowing qualified, external faculty or professionals to serve on Thesis/Action Project committees. We ask for this guideline to be reconsidered for the following reasons: Our department has 7 approved Graduate Faculty, with no further faculty eligible. Several faculty members serve on multiple thesis/action project committees simultaneously. As numbers increase, this will worsen. While faculty members from other departments can serve on thesis/action project committees, not all departments complement student research topics. External faculty or professionals provide expertise and credentials not held by current department faculty members. When students complete practicum experiences with other facilities or organizations, they are afforded opportunities to become members of outside research teams or to access existing data sets. Representatives or owners of these data must be included and should count as full committee members. Community research partnerships increases the universitys visibility, a defining objective.
