No more than three hours of credit may be received for one internship experience, no matter how many clock hours are involved. Students will sign up first for MCM 4130. Upon successful completion of the internship, a student in a later semester might sign up for another internship experience under MCM 4140. The faculty coordinator of all internships varies by semester (and summer session). Please refer to course listings in Braveweb for the name of this instructor. Requirements for Admission to Internship *Minimum of Junior standing (60 hours or more) or waiver from the Faculty Coordinator. *Minimum of 2.0 overall GPA with 2.5 major GPA or waiver. *Completion of prerequisites (See catalog). *Course override from the Faculty Coordinator upon completion of Learning Contract. Registration and Fees Student interns will complete normal registration procedures in order to obtain academic credit. An internship can be attempted during fall, spring, or summer session. Students must register for the proper section of MCM 4130 or MCM 4140 after they have been given an override to register by the Faculty Coordinator. (See Application Procedure below.) They must pay all required university fees. An additional fee for insurance must also be paid. Additionally, all job-related expenses (housing, transportation, etc.) are the responsibility of the intern. Stipends and salaries may be given by the internship organization, but they are not the responsibility of the university, and they are not required to be given. Dates Due to university liability requirements, the internship officially begins on the first day of classes and ends on the last day of classes. Students will not receive credit for hours worked before the first day and after the last day of classes. Finding your Internship You, as the intern, are responsible for finding your internship. You may meet with the Faculty Coordinator several months before your internship semester begins and before you begin your search to learn where our students have interned recently. The Faculty Coordinator has the right to approve or deny your internship site request. Some ways to find an organization include: Use search engines to explore possible internships in your major and desired location Consult HYPERLINK "/career-center/career-center/jobs-and-internships/internships" /career-center/career-center/jobs-and-internships/internships Ask your own advisor and the Faculty Coordinator for internship ideas Check Handshake for a variety of paid/unpaid, remote/F2F, regional and national positions: https://uncp.joinhandshake.com/login You may not perform an internship under the supervision of a family member If the person who will be supervising you at your organization your Intern Site Supervisor -- is not familiar with our internship program, give the Information for Site Supervisors (pages 4 & 5 of this packet) to him or her. Application Procedure Once you and your site supervisor have reached agreement on your internship, your supervisor should complete and sign the form titled "Internship Request Form" (page 6 of this packet) writing your name on the line for "student requested." Next, give the Internship Request Form to the faculty supervisor for your section of internship and complete with him/her the Learning Contract (page 7). Upon signing the Learning Contract, you will receive an override to register for the class on Braveweb. For insurance purposes, you may not begin your internship until you are officially enrolled in the class. Note: You need to complete the Learning Contract and Braveweb registration no later than the last day to add a class, or else you may be denied enrollment. The add deadline is on the academic calendar of the universitys website. Instructions for Registering for the Internship Class 1. When the Faculty Coordinator has given you an override, go to Braveweb and register. First, know the Course Reference Number (CRN) for the class you want to enter. If this is your first internship, you need to register for MCM 4130. If this is your second internship, you should register for MCM 4140. Braveweb has different ways to find the CRN number, but one way is to click on the "Find a class to add" link. 2. After youve found the CRN, go to the "Add class" page, and scroll down to the bottom. 3. In the space provided, type the CRN number. Then press enter. When this is completed, registration is instantaneous, and the class will show up on your schedule. If you receive an error message, write it down and contact Ms. Jennifer Carter, the departments administrative assistant, at (910) 522-5723. Requirements: 1. You are expected to have 135 hours of meaningful contact hours with your organization. 2. Perform meaningful duties required by your Site Supervisor. Duties will exclude any janitorial services or personal errands unrelated to the organization. The Faculty Coordinator may suggest tasks that would make the internship the most useful experience. 3. Create and submit any logs, journals, portfolios or other items as specified in the Learning Contract. Examples of such items may be: A work log that includes daily hours, activities, assignments, responsibilities and learning opportunities A final reflective essay or journal entries Samples of your work or a demo reel. If work samples are required, do not turn in samples on which you did not perform a significant portion of the work. 4. Ensure that your Site Supervisor evaluates you and submits the Hours Report Form (page 8 of this packet) at least once a month and at the conclusion of your internship. The number of hours submitted on the forms should add up to minimum of 135 hours. 5. Ensure that your Site Supervisor submits the Intern Site Supervisors Final Report at the end of your internship. 6. Notify the Faculty Coordinator immediately if problems develop so that they may be quickly resolved. Should your Site Supervisor find it necessary to terminate your internship for justifiable cause, such termination could result in a grade of F for the course and may preclude any further internship assignments for you. Grades The midterm grade will be assigned by the Faculty Coordinator and based upon the Hours Report Forms received from the Site Supervisor, plus receipt of the Mid-term Self Evaluation Form (pp. 9-10 or in Canvas) if required in the Internship Learning Contract. The final grade will be assigned by the Faculty Coordinator and will be based on: *Timely submission of your Hours Report Forms *Satisfactory performance and completion of 135 contact hours as indicated on the Hours Report Forms *Intern Site Supervisors Final Report *Adherence to the Internship Learning Contract including personal reflective documents. Information for Intern Site Supervisors Internship Program Department of Mass Communication 鶹 Why Have Internships? Internships with broadcast stations, public relations agencies or departments, newspapers, magazines, and companies and organizations with related ties are a required part of training for Mass Communication majors at 鶹P. Experiences under the supervision of experienced professionals in the real workplace are often an academic highlight for students. Many businesses find interns to be valuable as well. Student interns bring enthusiasm and new ideas, as well as an eagerness to learn a variety of tasks. The two groups together make a winning combination. What Is Required of Businesses and Organizations? We need businesses or organizations that will appoint one person to supervise the intern and expose the student to as many aspects of the organizations operations as practical that are applicable to the field. (Please do not ask students to perform janitorial services or personal errands unrelated to the organizations mission. That time will not count toward the minimum 135 hours.) We ask that organizations provide 135 hours of meaningful work experience for the intern. We ask that you as the supervisor of the intern be both a boss and a mentor. Students need encouragement when they are doing well and correction and advice when they are not. We expect the students to take correction well and to seek to continually improve and develop skills. To that end, we ask you to evaluate the intern on a regular basis (at least monthlyweekly in Summer may be helpful) using our Internship Hours Report Form. Your intern will give you the form, and after you complete it, you may give it back to the intern, or you can fax it or email it to us. We also ask that you make us aware of problems as soon as they develop, so that we can help correct them if necessary. We want this to be a good experience for you as much as for the intern. We also ask that you give a final written evaluation at the end of the internship, including a recommended final course grade, using our Intern Site Supervisors Final Report Form. Your intern will give you this form. This form will be used by the Faculty Internship Coordinator in the Department of Mass Communication, along with student assignments for the course, to help determine the final course grade. We would also welcome from you any feedback on how we can improve student preparation for the workplace and/or improve the internship process. What additional communication skills, for example, would you like to see in a future intern? What is Required of Student Interns? Student interns are required to complete 135 hours of on-site work for their internship. In addition, students are expected to prepare work samples or a reflective essay or journal to the Faculty Coordinator. Interns are expected to be reliable, hard working and flexible. They may keep a log of all hours they work and the activities and responsibilities they handle and keep samples of the work they do. Interns may be carrying a full academic load and have other responsibilities. Therefore, their internship hours must revolve around their academic schedule. Financial Compensation Organizations that provide internships are not required to provide any financial assistance in the form of stipends, salary, or reimbursement for transportation, but they may provide such assistance as they are able. Students pay tuition and an insurance fee for the experience and often have to give up other employment in order to intern. It is important for the organization and intern to agree on this matter in advance. Application Procedure You may request an intern with or without a specific student in mind. Submit the Internship Request Form (p. 6). The Faculty Coordinator will try to find a student who would be a suitable intern for you. If you already know a student you would like as your intern, you may give the request form to the student who will take it to the Faculty Coordinator for approval. After the request form is approved, the student and the faculty will complete a Learning Contract, which will allow the student to enroll in the internship class. The Internship may begin on the first day of classes and is covered until the last day of classes of the semester or summer sessions. If you have any questions at any time during the internship, you may call the Mass Communication Department at 910-522-5723 and ask to speak to the Faculty Coordinator.
